Vial of Life Program

The Vial of Life is a nationally recognized program which aides EMS in gathering helpful emergency medical information.  A perscription pill bottle labeled with a Vial of Life sticker has an emergency medical form enclosed within it.  The emergency medical form is filled completed and updated as needed.  If the event a medical emergency arises and a resident is unable to remember or communicate effectively their medical history, medications and/or allergies the vial is given to EMS as a resource in gathering valuable medical information to treat the patient more effectively. 

The Vial of Life is stored either in a person's refigerator or with their daily medications.  EMS agencies across the nation are familiar with this program and are aware of these standard places these vials are kept.  It is highly recommended that each member of the household have their own vial and emergency medical form.  Even if a person has no major medical problems, takes minimal or no medications and/or has allergies or not this information is just as important as someone who has an extensive medical history. 

Vial of Life emergency medical forms should be updated regularly so that EMS is provided with the most current medical information.  It is recommended for those who take many medications that they include a seperate list in their vial.  This allows the standard medical information form to stay constant and allows the seperate medication list to be updated more easily and as often as needed.
